Why The Gun In Civilization?

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some. When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender. There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly. Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.





When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. Very true. I think perhaps many of your responders are not thinking about how many died in Germany under Hitler because guns had been confiscated, or Russia, or a great number of other places. The fact that Americans have the freedom to own weapons was a great part of why the Japanese during WWII decided not to attempt an invasion of our mainland (look it up - the great majority of Americans owned guns and the Japanese military knew it). It has long been said that those who forge their weapons into plow shares will plow for those who don't. The intent of those who founded this nation was to allow gun ownership not only for food and self defense, but as a check against the power of the government for they can not overcome an armed populace. I have no doubt that America's new administration will introduce much stronger gun control laws in the very near future that may well include a buy back program such as Australia went though about a year ago - to disastrous results for the safety of the population. False. Gun control has been used as a tool by those that have killed millions around the world. Gun control is responsible for law abiding citizens not having a firearm in a situation where it would save their life or the life of another. Gun control is responsible for the criminalization of exercising your basic human rights. It is a huge contributing factor in the deaths of millions, but the actual cause is of course the criminals and criminal governments that actually do the killing.

If our country were ever invaded, and the invaders, attacked the military bases and government centers first, then it would be up to the people to form a militia. You can't form a militia without guns.





Our country (US) and our economy is starting to weaken. We are more open to invasion than we have been for a long, long time. Some of you sit on your couch, too misinformed or lazy to care.





Criminals will get guns off the black market. Good law-abiding citizens won't. I'd rather have a gun while a criminal also has a gun than only a criminal having one. Plus, I'm probably a better shot than he is.

Very well true! Because only where you have gun control laws, those that work above the law, and below the laws, will have guns! The average citizen will be unarmed! If someone threatens you, or your family, wouldn't you want to defend yourself?! By the time the cops arrive, it will be too late! The crook is long gone, you and/or your family member(s)might be hurt or dead!

Gun control is only for Law abiding people, criminals arnt going to care less.


In fact in the UK it is now easier to get hold of an illegal gun than it was before the ban. The ban was a complete waste of time.

And to me, gun control means being able to hit your target. So in that respect, your statement is true. But if by gun control, you mean keeping them out of the hands of law abiding citizens, your statement is false.
I could see maybe failure of gun control causing that amount of problems but not gun control itself. To be honest I am not really sure, but here is my stance on gun control. If you make guns illegal only criminals will own one. Why would you want criminals owning guns?
